Woke up today and Note 2 won't register on the network. Tried the sim in another phone and it was alright. Checked IMEI and it seems to be some generic one. Does not correspond to the one behind the battery. I have given it to Samsung service centre to find out what happened there.
Hope some rogue app did not change and steal my IMEI.

Ya. but managed to restore stock rom and reset the counter.

Ya I had. But it still did not work even after restoring from backup and associated permissions.Apparently some people over at XDA forums have reported the same problem. Maybe the backup script did not work as intended and created a corrupt backup. But there is no way to find out.

Try HC-ktool to restore your backup
BTW did you try flashing another modem? Once happened to me and flashing modem solved it

Good point regarding flashing modem. Right now, the phone is with Samsung service center and will know about the status tomorrow.Thanks.

Just wanted to ask if custom ROM's are any good ? ...i really like my touchwiz interface on the note 2 , large icons and alot of functionality, the only thing i hate is the Samsung Bloatware issed-off:
