Hi guys,I have BSNL 250 plan, ZTE-513B ZXdsl wireless router and connected to Vonage for my parents, in Ahmedabad gujarat, been using for like 4-5 month NO issue with connection or call everything is working fine:thumbsup:. there is no PC or laptop in house only vonage is connected to that router. Now the question is every month I get huge bill, it mention usage of every month more then 2000 mb:( and there is .90RE charge per 1mb. I did made my wireless rotuer secure still same huge bill. it show one month is usage is 1500 another month 8000 and goes on............ Can anyone know what could be the problem I dont think that while you talk through VIOP it would upload that much big data or while its connected it would upload data. on average I talk half hour every day Does anyone else have/had problem like this if yes what is the solution. :wall:paying less for vonage but huge for BSNL :wall: I am thinking to dissconnect it or get 500 2GB or 1500 unlimited plan

Well the problem lies with your BSNL connection. You are on a Rs. 250/PM plan which gives you combined 1GB of upload/download speed. This is kind of limited usage account and CANNOT be used for a regular VOIP phone. Vonage uses 3 codecs G.711, G.726, G.729. And I am pretty sure your vonage line is on G. 711 codec. This codec uses lots of bandwidth (a.k.a: uploading/downloading) while your are on call. To be more precise.. while you talk on vonage line ur incoming voice and out going voice is transfered as data packets... and this consumes bandwidth. Higher bandwidth usage.. less compression and call quality is clear. The bandwidth usage is in following decreasing order... G.711 < G.726 < G.729. A phone line with G.729 uses much less bandwidth compared to G.711. But call quality will be some what less because of more compression. You don,t have to worry about this cos.. u will still hear clear voice. I have been using VOIP line with G.729 codec and more than happy with voice quality.

You have two options to try. First one: Call vonage customer service and ask them to move your phone account to less bandwith codec G.729. It will surely decrease your total overall usage but A.F.A.K will surely exceed 1GB. Try to change to next higher plan which is 500/m with 2.5GB Up/Down and see it for a month. But as UL750 is only (~10$ more) I would advise you the second option.

Second One: Change the BSNL broadband plan to UL750 which is unlimited 255Kbps/month. You still need to change the codec cos G.711 codec does not work well with 255Kbps lines and will result in voice cracking.

Vonage uses different names for these codecs.. like 90, 50, 30 ..hope this helps...

hehe.. Voice on 1gb limit ! it is not bsnl's fault :P . It is you who should go for a higher limit or unlimited plan ! :)both incoming/outgoing data counts ! so for voice, please go for a higher plan !!go for 750 monthly plan.. you have unlimited there !!

you can switch to 750 UL.. i too have a vonage and its used by my family almost everyday , this is connected to a home 750 plan unlimited.. but i have tracked the usage and its never gone above 1gb..I am talking at an approximate 1 hr per day.. or sometimes 2hrs.. So i guess its to do with the codec.. even though you reduce your codec you shouldnt have any problems cause my vonage clarity is pretty good with 256kbps.. So incase you enquire more about the codecs and try sorting that out, then you wouldnt need to pay 500rs more per month.. cause then it wouldnt go more than 1gb...But if the phone is being used for more than 1 or 2 hrs a day then probably you need to upgrade!!

thanks a lot guy's it make more sense to me now "Masula" thanks for details explain... I will try to change my vonage codecs first and then will change to BSNL 500 or UL plan.
one more question if I choose to go with UL plan what kind of codecs for vonage i need to select I think G.729 or 90

How can I check my usage don't tell me bsnl.co.in is not working
thanks again guys

hey guys everything is working fine thanks for your help, but there is still little issue here is the snap shot of my usage if you see then every half hour it uploading and doiwnloading same amount of data even if the phone is not in use, it use to do before the issue and its also happen right now too, Is it normal or still some thing is wrong, > how can I attach or paste snap shot of my bill here i tried is not working
