Mumbai can watch India-England Test series, but not Delhi
Tuesday - Jul 17, 2007Televisionpoint.com Correspondent
Several Cricket fans in the Delhi and NCR might have to watch the forthcoming India-England Test series, beginning on Thursday, at their friends or relatives' houses since the telecast may not be available throughout the city, unless certain issues are resolved. The series will be available on ESPN Star Sports' new channel, Star Cricket, which is currently not being telecast to cable TV households and direct-to-home (DTH), except Dish TV.

Viewers in the city's Conditional Access System (CAS) areas though, will be able to watch the channel but subscribing to it. A few multi-system operators (MSO's) and a big DTH operator have clashed with ESPN-Star Sports over Star Cricket's subscription charges and do not telecast the channel as of now. The broadcaster has officially reached an agreement with Incable for telecasting the channel. Viewers connected with MSO's Hathway and Siti Cable, who together control a chunk of Delhi's cable TV market, will not be able to watch the channel if the matter is not sorted out by Thursday.

Star Cricket is available in the CAS areas currently for Rs 5, based on the TRAI guidelines, which do not permit a price higher than that for any pay channel. As far as the one-dayers are concerned, ESPN will telecast them with English commentary while the Hindi version will be available on Star Cricket.

Nobody from the corporate communications of Hathway was available for comment at the time of filing the story. Earlier, ESPN Star Sports had sent notices to MSO's, angry over the alleged non-compliance with TRAI guidelines concerning subscriber information as well as payment issues. The MSO's felt that in the non-CAS areas, Star Cricket, with a rate of Rs 28 per month, did not have many takers, making the distribution unviable. However, sources say an agreement is in the offing.

When queried to Tata Sky, its official spokeperson said, "Star Cricket is a channel, which has been reportedly launched in June 2007 by ESPN Software India. As you are aware, we are currently showing their existing channels ESPN and Star Sports. The forthcoming cricket matches were expected to be featured on the two existing channels but we are now informed that Star Cricket, which is also a pay channel, will carry the same. Nevertheless the one-day matches are available on the DD channel. In the light of this surprising development, we are exploring all possible ways to protect our customers from the rise in costs. We are currently in negotiations and are attempting to find a solution in the best interests of our esteemed customers :hysterical:."

Though there is good news for the Cricket fans in the Mumbai suburbs as they would be able to watch the forthcoming Test series following an understanding between private broadcaster ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd and the MSO's.

Viewers in the suburbs, that fall outside the CAS zone, were upset on not being able to watch India's warm up games in England because the MSO's were not broadcasting the recently launched Star Cricket channel that will be exclusively broadcasting the Test series. The three-match Test series begins on July 19.

Rajesh Kaul, Vice-president, Affiliate Sales, ESPN Software India, said, "We have signed on Incable, a national MSO which covers almost 50 per cent of Mumbai's non-CAS areas. We have also signed with almost all cable operators/ MSO's in Mumbai with the exception of Hathway.", adding the channel was also available in 75 per cent household of the island city.

The problem started when the MSO's declined to beam the channel in the suburbs saying the Rs 28 per month charge fixed by the channel had no takers and made the distribution unviable. ESPN in reply issued notices to MSO's but the two parties, with the exception of Hathway, have reached an agreement for now. While the Test series will be broadcasted exclusively on Star Cricket, ESPN will telecast them with One-day internationals (ODI's) with English commentary while the Hindi version will be available on Star Cricket.

The one-dayers will also have to be shown on DD as part of the implementation of the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act 2007.

So basically his reply was like every other bit of correspondence I've ever seen from Tata Sky. It could be briefly summarized as:
blah blah blah blah blah..
bollocks bollocks bollocks bollocks bollocks bollocks ...

Warm Regards,
KV Anand

Subject: Disturbed with TataSky

Dear Sir,
I am writing you this mail as I lost hope with TataSky. To begin, I was one of the very few customers in Chennai who bought TataSky connection in the third week of August – 2006. I preferred to TataSky instead of Dish TV because lack channel availability of channels with Dish TV. But today I am worried and distressed that I made a bad choice in opting to go with TataSky DTH. For the last 3 weeks I started to disturb TataSky customer support executive (CSE) for the star cricket channel availability in TataSky. They rather the management gave false news to the poor CSE of TataSky that the India – England cricket test series are available in ESPN Star Sports which totally false as a consumer and many more like me are aware couple of months back that India – England cricket test series are live & exclusive on Star Cricket only One Day matches are simultaneously available in ESPN. I was stunned to see todays economic times newspaper where your spokes persons has quoted:”“”Tata Sky’s spokesperson said the company was still in negotiations and added, “The forthcoming cricket matches were expected to be featured on the two existing channels, but now we are informed that Star Cricket, which is also a pay channel, will carry the same. Nevertheless, the one-day matches are available on the DD channel.” Arch rival Dish TV’s spokesperson confirmed the company had reached an agreement with the sports broadcaster”””. I really wonder if I wanted to watch the match in DD then why should I go for your service I could gone with DD Free DTH service.
You people must think twice better than a consumer whether this channel is a pay channel, whether it has got any exclusivity property where a consumer is aware of the but I am sorry say that your spokes person is not aware. I don’t know who is that spokes person. Please check on the link for proof: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/Services/Advertising/Some_viewers_may_lose_out_on_action/articleshow/2208773.cms

The reply I got and still getting from CSE is that “Sir, we will take up your feedback and pass on to the concern department” the reply given the CSE is not happening today but its happening for the past 3 weeks when ever I call your help line numbers regarding star cricket. Next statement they give us is “Sir, we are still working on to get Star Cricket and as soon as the channel comes on board we will intimate through alert”. I wanted to inform you that before you give the alert message of any popular channel we will know it through various sources.

Less than 48 hours to go for the 1st test between India & England still TataSky management is not clear in giving proper reply to its customers what’s the problem in adding the channel rather I would say you are ignoring us. Your competitor Dish TV started to provide the channel couple of days back and your management is not aware that too. By this you will not only loose customer base but also you will get negative impact from existing customer through word of mouth publicity. Dish TV is able to provide the customers with more channels for the same amount what I am paying you Rs. 300/month. I don’t think Dish TV is no longer a competitor to TataSky rather I would your competitor will be DD Free DTH if the same things persists. This I quote because as being joint venture company of Tata & Star you are not able to provide the home channels: Star Majha & Star Cricket then I wonder how you will provide the other service providers channel.

Finally, I request who is reading this mail please send me a mail whether we will get to see Star Cricket channel before the 1st test match between India & England which starts on Day after tomorrow i.e., July 19, 2007 – 3.30PM.

I got this email address after speaking to Anita – Specialized Desk (TataSky), Hyderabad as she has requested to mail you and added that I will definetly get a positive reply.

Please reply to the earliest,

Yours one of the customer who is loosing hope on TataSky,

A. Ravindra Bharathi,

Just i had a very long conversation with Tata Sky Team Manager and I blasted (I told him that Tata sky is at such a good position in the market just because of Cricketing Adds they have given like viewing in different angles in active sports) him like anything... for star cricket update. He was telling me the same old story that they are working on the same issue as they got lot of calls for star cricket channel.

After half an hour conversations with different superior management people (around three stages) finally the Team Manager intimated me that they are hoping the channel broadcast by tomorrow, but they did not want to commit the same.

Lets wish the Star cricket channel will come latest by tomorrow.
