eidur , firstly i must commend your sincere efforts in reaching neo sports . However i find it hard to accept that such a senior person would disclose accurate figures to public. If the figure of 18.75 Rs is to be believed than it still is huge when you take into consideration the entire subscriber base. One million subscribers , say , would mean Tata Sky paying 18.75 million rupees per month ! Why should tatasky take the burden on themselves when the subscribers are not paying for it ? Why pay such a huge amount when neo hardly have anything to boast of in the present situation. Even star cricket with the rights to england - india series is priced at 13 Rs. Neo imo are being too cocky and trying to sell themselves saying that they are as good as espnstar which is laughable.
Some people point to dishtv having more channels and adding new channels but the company till now has been running in a loss and they are taking a massive risk by hoping to bring in more customers at the expense of their losses. When tatasky takes off and i believe it's just a matter of time and with the Reliance , Airtel , Sun and Videocon to follow suit , Dish tv are going to end up in some deep shite in the coming years.
It really doesn't concern me that a senior person is willing to reveal exact details to the public. It is in this case, very much in their interest to do so.
The point on pricing is related to the cost of contracts obviously - and we all know that Neo paid a whole lot to acquire rights.
As for whether Tata Sky should still purchase the channel - of course they should. Sports entertainment is high priced, everywhere in the world. The Neo package includes Neo Sports and Neo Sports Plus, so the effective pricing is reasonable, when you consider that they also have rights to quality entertainment such as the Bundesliga, various ATP and WTA events, etc.
Fact is besides News and Sport, everything else falls into the tricky genre of regional preferences, while News and Sport to bind together our country. If Tata doesn't want to sign this contract - fine. Then allow us to purchase the channel on PPV @ Rs. 37+ for the channel. But ANY quality channel should be AVAILABLE TO US as consumers.
What is particularly frustrating about Tata Sky is that they are incompetent in negotiations, and incompetent when it comes to decision making. They're clearly incapable of providing a quality product bent around the wants of a diverse customer base and they're further incapable of providing OPTIONS to allow this diverse customer base to make individual decisions. India is meant to be turning capitalist, last I checked.
