I have been facing this problem from quite some time. I don't know why my download speed which is 2mbps is coming down to 407kbps and upload speed going up to 620kbps. I was using Zone Alarm but this reduced my download speed to less than 256kbps but upload remains the same. So I uninstalled it and right now I am just using Windows firewall. With Windows Firewall I am getting the above said speeds that is 407kpbs. Since my upload speed is working fine then I wonder what is the problem with the download speed. These values are based on www.dslreports.com and it is here where I tested my speed.
I have Windows XP Mediacenter, AVG antivirus and I am using Windows Firewall.

well..its ADSL " Asymmetric Digital Subscribers Line" simply understand BOLD word...in ADSL connections ...upload speed is always lower than download speed.....its the rule. thr is another type of DSL called SDSL ( symmetric DSL ) which has same upload and download speed..but SDSL is rarely used now a days....

for more info abt ADSL...here is wiki.

That is the whole point. I have ADSL and I know it is not symmetric DSL. My Download speed should be more than Upload but for me it is the other way. I want to know if something is restricting my download speed.

what is the SNR on the downstream? What is the attenuation? Check that first. Also check what speeds are you syncing at. Check if you have CRC errors. Dude we're no magicians to tell you whats wrong with your connection just cuz you say you get slow downloads. Do some research. Check your computer, modem, tinker around, try to come up with a hypothesis and then ask a question. Its like coming into a public place and asking - why the hell is my shower not working? How the heck will anybody tell you what is wrong?? ;)
