hi all,I am using airtel 850 plan , connecting through usb.I am told that using a ethernet card for broadband will increase my speed. Is it correct? Now im getting a download speed varying between 30 - 60 kbpsand also has got lot of disconnections , can i stabilize my connection using ethernet card? Y is my USB connection unstable?Pls clarifyThanks in advance

Ethernet will increase your speed only if your USB port is USB 1.1, you won't find dramatic changes if it's USB 2.0 and about frequent disconnections I don't think UBS connection is to blame...It's fault of line/modem/exchange...

Welcome to Broadbandforum.in
What is the promised speed for Airtel850 plan ?
Post screen shot or give snr/attn/mod/speed selected.

ethernet will connect your pc to your modem/router at 100mbps whereas usb i believe is 12mbps. if your internet speeds are anything less than 12mbps then u will not experience a difference as u are not maximizing your usb data transfer rate of 12mbps. however if your internet recieved from your ISP is more than 12mbps then u will only get up to the usb speeds. my advice is to get another network card if you are recieving a higher bandwidth than the usb can supply it is really cheap. or else u arent being affected except for the fact that 1 of your usb ports are being used for internet.
However when networking several PC's u will want to use Ethernet cause u may want to transfer data and u can maximize its use otherwise USB is fine.

Thanks 4 the replies guyz,

if i remember correctly USB 1.1 in 2mbps

so unless you mave i 8mbps connection, there will be no speed increasse

and frankly, airtels 8mbps conn is a waste

better to take 512kbps UL for nearly the same price

atleast u dont have 4GB limit which u can finish in a few hours with 8mbps speeds

Read what essbebe posted, usb 1.1 can provide max 12 mbps. I am using beetel 100cx which is a usb 1.1 modem and i get full 2.5 mbps whenever i get a speed boost with airtel.

Siva, I had the same pbm of disconnection. on seeking help from airtel call centre i was told that in the first place i should have been told by the broadband engineer that USB option is for laptops whereas for desktop users ethernet card is what we should be using.

I immediately placed a request for a ethernet cable as i did not have one but i had ethernet card installed. i told him i need urgently. it was delivered within 4 hours.

buy ethernet card!

members/connectwithmenow/OK. Misleading information from Airtel. They want to get you off their backs! What they meant, probably was use with their data cards! ( in Wireless mode )How and why , in the first place Airtel , did not provide the RJ45 cable and connect to your ethernet port ? Even if you did not have an ethernet card in your Desktop computer should not the advice been given earlier ?By the way laptop computers , mostly used in WIFI mode ! Has a built in ethernet card always. as standard. The LAN WIFI card may have to be purchased seperately. Anyway, You got the latest modem ( due to IBF) Happy surfing.
