Portable would be nice but not a necessity. Need to improve coverage on the ground floor.

I'll strongly advise to stay away from Netgear WN3000RP :'(

First problem is IP conflicts. You cannot change DHCP settings and its IPs are in the range 192.168.1.x
Devices will connect to it only 1 out of 3 times. I don't really know why this happens. Could be IP conflict issue.

Ofcourse this can be solved if you change access your modem settings and change its DHCP settings which I couldn't.

Do read its reviews as I remember someone else on this forum too who faced problems with that wireless extender.

Few brands have launched routers with 9 dbi antennas.... recently 3 antennas products have before a rare breed....!
By the way does the plug mountable range extenders really help ....? Bcos most of them have embedded antennas in them...!!!

I am currently using a Netis WF2409. Best router I have ever used. Covers a 3 story 2000sft house in almost all areas ( weak, but usable signal across floors ). It has tooooooo many options compared to the older Netgear I had.
Give it a try

Is your router on top floor ?
if yes, but an Additional Antenna or if your existing one is Detachable, Mount it outside the window/roof
if above fails, then
Flash a custom Firmware like DD-WRT and set to full throttle,
you would get better signals than bridging 2 routers.
As its Single Building I don't think anyone should use any other option.
