Having a tooth extracted nowdays compared to twenty yrs back is a world of difference. The diameter of the needle is much smaller for a start, so even the intial prick is lot less painful.I think the harder part is finding a dentist you are comfortable with.

i got a tooth extracted earlier this year. the process was rather painful. the pain began when the anesthetic effect started disappearing. i was in sheer pain for around 2 hours. i had to take in two bottles of beer to get it under control. then i went to sleep. next morning, it was pretty much ok. the experience was not something i would want to feel again.

when I was kid, i got one tooth removed WITHOUT any injection. It was some 'DANTYAGNA', my dad took me there. Doctor pressed some points on my head and pulled it out WITH fingers. And guess what NO PAIN at all. Seriously.
I dont remember who that doc was but I guess there are still some such doctors. Find the one if he is around ur area.

I got an almost completely decayed molar removed recently. I didnt feel any pain when anesthesia was being given or after that. But my molar was so decayed the doctor couldnt use pliers to hold the teeth and pull them out as they always do. So he was putting something between my gums and tooth to ply them out. It did hurt a bit, but i was embarrassed when the dentist's assistant had to hold my head so that i dont move!! After extraction, i coudlnt eat much till 24 hours after which it was fine. So be ready to take liquid food. Its the best, because you get to drink juice and eat ice cream for lunch and dinner 
incidentally the tooth that was extracted from my mouth was also practically finished. only parts of it were remaining and the roots were to be removed. so well it was a similar experience as above. i took in lots of juices that day as eating was out of the question.
