Nokia 5800 does support the kind of 3g that was auctioned anywhere in india, you'll get speeds up to 3.6 Mbps

It's sad Vodafone could not make it in Karnataka. so now waiting for MNP if the charges from other competitors are any better

Um... what? That is exactly the type of 3G spectrum that has been auctioned.

3G in the GSM world is the marketing name for UMTS, and 3G services can be anything with a transmission rate of 384kbit/s or more, though it's more likely that any new equipment the carriers are buying will support 14 Mbit/s.

The 5800 supports HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbit/s, while HSDPA (AKA 3.5G) can allow data transmission rates up to 14 Mbit/s.

All this is different to the various EV-DO networks in use by BSNL, MTS, Reliance and Tata for their respective service offerings at 3.1 Mbit/s using USB dongles, which are utilizing the competing and incompatible CDMA2000 standard.

And all THIS is why I've been saying that the 3G spectrum auction has been a complete farce and why it probably won't have much effect on the spread of broadband: the EV-DO stuff is already available and has been around for what... 18 months. Why will this be any better?

Which you manually switched to, no?

well.. this is how things happened. BSNL told me to send some 3G-Activation-SMS. I send them. After 4-5 hours got a confirmation message. I restarted my phone(N73) to "Dual Mode" and I can see "3G". Whenever 3G signal is less it goes to "E" mode.

ok, so technically possible, but operators may not automatically allow all existing 2G users to get into 3G network in current plans due to their commercial reasons.
I guess after few years when 3G would become common, they would switch off 2G and all users by then would directly be in 3G networks (like in other countries :) )

NOPE! That will never happen. They won't migrate ALL customers to 3G..that will be a burden on 3G spectrum then! And they won't won't waste 2G spectrum by keeping it idle..

Hi,How fast it 3G going to be in India? How fast the download speed will be on mobiles? I hope it is better than all these Photon Whiz and the likes which give download speeds of around 15 kbps at their best that too rarely. Thanks
