so many conflicting reports. Now i am being told by CC that for 384k and 256k users your limit is15gb(both dl and upload) and after that speeds will be half.what a joke. Then these plans are not broadband as per TRAI.

then did u not tell them it is unfair and it is illegal to put data caps on unlimited plans?

You better write a strongly worded email against datacap and AFUP . Send them to Customer Care, Nodal Officer and Appeleate Authority.

Code:
Customer [email protected] Officer:Karnataka	- Ajay Kumar Jain Nodal.southabts at airtel.in	Phone 080-41115338	Fax: 080-41112348Appellate - Karnataka	Manoj Manicketh appellate.southabts at airtel.in	Phone 080-41115201	Fax 080-41112349
Email to all of them and tell them about this unfair AFUP

Damn! That thought never entered my mind, thanks for this :O

leave online radio on. turn on WEP and give the wep to people you trust.

FYI 384 kbps customers are downgraded to 256 kbps after hitting 25gb, so they dont have a case. Its only the 256 kbps customers who can do something about it.

everyone can do something about it. since they are 'quoting TRAI', lets question TRAI. mail across complaints to TRAI.

and well, we'll see whether they can afford to close unlimited plans. those plans are the one' that the 'neighbourhood computer guy' uses. and he is the one who is asked " konsi internet lagwaun?". these are the guys who help the isp grow. you fock 'em one bit, they move on and take away others along.

Right on, all the way  The number of people who come to me for advise for all computer related are endless. One whiff of Airtel's 'Dont care' attitude and people will run away like anything. I cant imagine the number of people i have recommended Airtel to. This is just plain sad Airtel has decided to go this way

I have reproduced my complaint to the AIRTEL nodal officer at Chennai below:

Dear Sir,

While I started developing a feeling that Airtel is by far the best in the field of providing broadband service in India, a recent action by Airtel comes as a rude shock, spoiling the image.

I am a subscriber of your 256 kbps UL plan @ Rs.799/- p.m., which I am using for the past 8 months.

When I contacted Customercare yesterday (13-02-09) to enquire whether there was any problem with the gateway as my connection speed had suddenly fallen to 50%, I was shocked to learn that my connection speed has been cut to 128 kbps deliberately by Airtel, as my usage in the current billing period has exceeded 15 GB.

This bombshell decision gives rise to the following legal and moral issues:

1. The CC representative claimed that the action was taken due to some TRAI directive. That is a clear lie, as TRAI has NOT issued any such directive till date. It is only that Airtel has sent recently a suggestion to TRAI for introducing a "Fair Usage Policy", but it is a bllatant illegality to just go ahead and implement its suggestion without receiving an approval from TRAI. Please note even TRAI is only an advisory body and even it cannot implement a decision of this sort without DoT approval.

2. TRAI has prescribed the lower speed limit for broadband in India as 256 kbps (though anything less than 1Mbps is not truly broadband by International standards!). So, my internet speed which has been cut to 128 kbps since 14-02-2009 is no more a broadband connection. AIRTEL is guilty of breach of contract here and is liable for legal action against.

3. There is no point in taking umbrage under a claim that ISP's in some other advanced countries have also started "capping" their unlimited plans. The internet speeds in those countries are not already curtailed to a beggarly 256 kbps! Nobody else in the world calls 256 kbps as "broad"band and it is a shame on the part of AIRTEL to decelerate it still further and call it and charge it as a broadband connection.

4. If AIRTEL wanted to implement any such modification to the existing plans they must have been honest enough to have informed the existing customers about this decision, giving an option and notice period to continue or quit, and implement the revised policy only on the expiry of the notice period. So, implementing such a decision straightaway, that too, within days of merely sending a suggestion to TRAI, is tantamount to outright CHEATING and BACKSTABBING customers who cannot accept it meekly.

5. Maybe, AIRTEL is hard pressed to save on bandwidth to divert for their newly introduced Digital TV euphoria, but this type of armtwisting the existing customers is nothing but fraud and crass commercialisation, unbecoming of any decent business house.

Is AIRTEL going to relent, with an apology to affected cusrtomers, or, are they going ahead with their unholy decision which is nothing but an immoral and illegal action, by any standard?

Good to see Airtel killing itself - one customer at a time. :SInstead of increasing speeds to Mbps, looks like Airtel (and Indian ISPs) are now interested in implementing data caps for 'unlimited' plans (which are still stuck in Kbps age)!International ISPs might have implememted such fair usage policies but before comparing, have a look at their speeds. I don't know a single person who has broadband speed < 5 Mbps.Implementing data caps for broadband plans < 1 Mbps is unethical and pure bullshit. I've heard that Reliance and TATA own the world's largest undersea cable network. But how much do Indian people benefit from it?Just another recepie for killing internet in India. :|

@ above Let's not overreact or use abusive language. I am against the policy as much as anyone but Airtel still provides better (if not best) services and uptime than others. Yes we have to protest but not in the way where we make ourselves look ugly, so just watch the language buddy. Sunny

if your isp treats you like a dog then i have the right to so the same thing to them.As they say an eye for an eye.

2 Wrongs don't make a right either. Just 3 days back airtel was fine, put yourself in their shoes, how would u like someone dl 100 gbs off torrent, they pay for bandwidth not the connection speeds they give you. I am not saying they are justified , Neither they did the right thing or in right way but they have not done any thing where one should lose cool and go abusive.
