Hi fellow IBF members,
I am facing a unique issue with Airtel Fiber Broadband connection.

So I got bridge mode enabled on LAN4 from Airtel (BIG Achievement :D). I tried to connect using my laptop using it with username and pswd. And it works fine. I can access internet, all good.
However the problem start with second router. So, I have second router of Asus. I tried connected the WAN input of Asus router with LAN4 of Airtel router.
I created the pppoe connection and gave the same username and pswd, but strangely it does not connect. When I check the logs I can see below,

May 5 10:45:31 pppd[2414]: Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
May 5 10:45:31 pppd[2414]: RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.11 compiled against pppd 2.4.7

Not sure what the problem is :(

TLDR: Unable to connect second router to Airtel router with PPPOE connection.

Can anyone please help me out here ....

HI Fellow IBFians,

I have a strange issue with Airtel Fiber connection.

So here it goes, I got bridge mode enabled (BIG Achievement) on LAN4 of Airtel (Nokia) router. I verified by connecting my laptop (win 10) using pppoe credentials. All good.
The problem starts when I try to connect my second router from Asus. I connected the WAN port in Asus router to LAN4 for Airtel router. I entered setup wizard, selected PPPOE connection mode and added the same credentials. But strangely, its unable to connect to internet.
I checked the logs and here is what I can see

May 5 10:45:31 pppd[2414]: Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
May 5 10:45:31 pppd[2414]: RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.11 compiled against pppd 2.4.7

May 5 10:45:32 pppd[2416]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
May 5 10:45:32 pppd[2416]: Terminating on signal 15
May 5 10:45:32 pppd[2416]: Exit.
May 5 10:45:35 pppd[2445]: Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
May 5 10:45:35 pppd[2445]: RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.11 compiled against pppd 2.4.7
May 5 10:45:35 pppd[2447]: pppd 2.4.7 started by asus, uid 0

May 5 10:46:11 pppd[2447]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets

I am not sure what to make of it. If it can't get a public IP address, how can my laptop connect to same port with same credentials.

TLDR: Second router unable to establish PPPOE connection.
Can some help me out here ? I am so tired of reading different comments and trying out various solutions.

What is the Asus router make/model? Is the user manual available on web for that Asus router?
If laptop connected but Asus router is not, may be something to check further in the Asus router.
Can you share some screenshots of the Asus settings page?

Also some routers have manual setup and automatic setup wizards. I find that manual setup gives us more visibility and control into the connection.

I have seen this Timeout waiting for PADO packets on TP-Link when dialing PPPoE without the VLAN tag being set to 100.
Given that you have already got the bridge mode enabled from airtel and were able to dial from laptop, could you please check the airtel router page, also which model do you have?
Could you also tell the process of getting bridge mode enabled? Thanks.

Okay, Sorry for the late reply but here it goes,
1. I have Asus RT-AC66U B1 (link RT-AC66U B1|WiFi Routers|ASUS Global) router with flashed with Asuswrt-Merlin .
2. I have already tried resetting, factory reset etc, but the problem continues.
3. How I got it in bridge mode. It took some convincing, and some clever threatening to move to different service provider. Also, I have postpaid Airtel Black plan, so it wasn't that hard. Took about 4 days, but they finally agreed. Few points to note, engineer who visits us are not that good. They only know basic stuff. They have something called as NOC team, these guys usually request them to make changes. Also, at least in my case, NOC team was quite rude to these guys. I offered to talk to NOC team, but the engineer refused. After some convincing he allowed me to talk on some chat app. I explained the guy from NOC team my needs ( things like port forwarding, QOS, Open NAT etc). It took some time but he finally agreed.

Please note, they try to push down the static IP route down your throat all the time. Just take a hard stand and explain how bridge mode and static IP are completely independent. Read and prepare to defend yourself.

If it works with your laptop, then it is definitely not an issue with the bridge connection.
Use stock Asus OS and try again.

Else some other tshoots, you can try.
  • Build PPPOE on single port and not on bridge or any VLAN group.
  • Disable VLAN filtering.
  • Check if your firewall is configured to accept PPP packets.
  • Sometimes, there are bugs with ppp package, try re-installing.

If you can login to your modem, view the WAN settings and know how to go to Inspect/Developer tools, then right click on the password field and do inspect, it will show the password in the html tag
