testsubjectalpha, must be because of their improved capacity and low users being online at night. BTW one word of advice. HP6 is very hot right now. You should refrain from getting it lest it is from a SFTP.

I started getting 300+ kb/s speeds on my last mile connects so I contacted Airtel.

They told me a slightly different story. What they have done is upgraded the minimum guaranteed speed they offer you by 20%. For my 256 plan, the former minimum was 128 kb/s (i.e., I would never get last mile throughput lower than that). *That* is what they are increasing. So I will now never get lower than 128 + 20% = 153.6 kb/s on my 256 kb/s plan.

During the upgrade, maximum speeds will jump about as "backend server work is in progress". Once that is done, my maximum will again drop back to 256 kb/s.

I don't think so.

Last-mile connectivity is what Airtel actually throttles to control your bandwidth speed. This is the speed they are letting you have from their server to your system's interface (router/modem/bridge). This "channel" is also shared by other users in your immediate area so that is why on a 256 kb/s connection, you may get a lower actual bandwidth at certain times of the day.

The 12 Mb/s you refer to is perhaps the speed between your router/modem/bridge to your system (last-metre speed?). This depends on the interface used to connect said device to your system: USB, Ethernet, PCI, etc. All other things being equal this has no relevance to your actual connect speed to the Internet.
