Can I plug in GPON/EPON into an SFP Port on a network switch and get rid of ONT?

I personally think it should work, as long as you have the correct sfp meaning one with correct wavelength and power.. you don't wanna overdo by putting a SFP rated for 20KM in an 8KM run, 10Km is just fine.

Then you can change the MAC and other in the Router UI

There sure is compatibility issues with different routers and SFP

Like Mikrotik ones at times doesn't work with Juniper SFP module, or Cisco SFP Module.

Anyways, I'll be waiting for the result you get..

I personally am also thinking of putting a 10G SFP+ with a Dream Machine

If your works, I'll also buy the setup and try it with AirTel

@sahshivam In this particular case, I wasn't referring to those kind of compatibility issues. In the context of consumer ISPs running on fiber, all of them use PON.

So you need an SFP module which supports PON and PON MAC. There is a more detailed explanation here - SFP with PON MAC and w/o PON MAC

Basically, you cannot buy a regular SFP module to use with PON.

@MrGordon Do you know if multiple PPPoE sessions can be setup with the GPON device like a 4 port Airtel router? Not exactly sure but i think a bridge nework is setup on the router, and each ethernet port can then be used to bridge.

No.. multiple PPPoE sessions for a single account can't be created even if the ONT is the same. Even in DHCP mode the authentication is done based on the Mac of the ONT and not on the router connected in bridge mode.

There is some talk about 4 port emulation here, and it can be setup using virtual ethernet interface (VEIP). That sounds a lot like Airtel router, and perhaps multiple pppoe can be setup.

@rajil.s It should be possible. With the Airtel ONT/Router we are able to do it, so should be possible with other devices too. I haven't tried though.

@sahshivam It mostly depends on the provider and their server side PPPoE config. Airtel allows multiple PPPoE sessions for the same account, I've established two concurrent sessions, one on the Airtel router, other on my bridged router. On top of that static IP based interface.
