DTH war to intensify in Diwali

With the festive season around the corner, direct-to-home (DTH) companies are leaving no stone unturned to increase their subscription base. Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) owned Reliance Big TV has slashed the subscription price by Rs 1,000 and now stands at Rs 1,490 from the earlier Rs 2,500. This includes installation charges and three months subscription. Arun Kapoor, president, Big TV admitted, “It is a land grab game.” The company will launch its digital video recorder (DVR)-enabled set-top boxes (STBs) by December and is expected to be priced at Rs 6,500-7,000. The company has already placed an order for 2,50,000 STBs with the Korean company Hyundai and the first consignment of 25,000 STBs has already been received. It has 160 GB in-built hard disk that can record up to 100 hours of programming.

Recently Tata Sky, the JV between Star and Tata, launched Tata Sky+, a hi-end personal video recorder (PVR) enabled MPEG4 compliant STB. Priced at Rs 8,999, the company is expecting Tata Sky+ to get at least 10-20% subscription during the first phase of the launch. Dish TV, is also planning to launch DVR in a month’s time. Salil Kapoor, COO, Dish TV, said, “We are ready with our DVR system, but because of the fluctuation in dollar rates, we are yet to launch it.” The DVR system will have HDMI output with 140 hours of recording. Dish TV with 3.8 million subscribers has already announced two offers for the festive season - STBs at Rs 1990 and Rs 2,490.

Atul Bindal, president, Airtel Telemedia Services, which is the latest entrant in the business - Airtel DTH, said, “This festive season, Airtel has unveiled the much anticipated launch of Airtel DTH service. We have three main differentiators from our competitors.”

Dish tv will have a edge with hdmi output and 140 hours recording than normal 100 hours in other DTH players.
