im using Syrotech , but it struggle a lot ,so i decided to buy a router which support openwrt ( Asus rx53u )

since i already know that openwrt will be confusing , so i took help of my pi 5 ( i cant use pi 5 for openwrt ,its need for other works )

so innetwork> interface ,i got wan profile with some mac address, then i go to device tab to customise mac address ,but on saving restarting ,its not reflecting on wan interface ,why ?

on taking help with ai ,it says that pi 5 lacks wan port ,and also some kind of missing scripts which allows to write change directly into kernal

and it says ,this will not happen on openwrt running on router

i just wanted to test , and with some one help ,if all goes smooth ,then i will purchase pi 4 just for that ,and use router for wifi only , no budget router can match pi performance because of powerful cpu

also do i need vlan tagging ? do i need to create anohter device like eth0.300 ?

i will get asus router before the end of this month

i will flash openwrt on Asus rx53u

since it has physical wan port i should have no problem

step i will take

1. i will go netwrok >interface > device , their will be eth0 device ,so i need to create new device with vlan (802.q) with my vlan number and clone mac ( my pppoe mac address ) ,so on saving it it will create a virtual eth0.xxx device

2. then i will go to network> interface > then on wan ,i will change protocol to pppoe and device eth0.xxx and on additonal setting i will enter my pppoe username and password

my doubt -

1. can i use same mac address on eth0 and eth0.xxx
2. is their any risk ,like on booting ,openwrt will leak default mac address other then i cloned

Please read the reply on that reddit post. It was already mentioned to tag VLAN on the bridge profile on ONT and not anywhere else. If you configure things properly there will be no "leak".

so you are the one who helped me on reddit

wow thank you

so i need to enable only vlan in ont during bridge profile

and in openwrt ,just wan interface and eth.0 device with cloned mac address

i will show you before connecting to ont

thanks

yes i know ,i already own pi 5 ,and i thinking to buy mini pc

also i have better option ,nano pi r2s ,which cost 4000 rs only and has 1 gb ,quadcore cpu ,1 wan ,1 lan

i will go for it ,but most probably ,Asus rx53u will be more than enough for handling 60 mbps connection

thanks but pi 5 is used for many things ,like it runs immich ,jellyfin ,cloudflare tunnel

and i do have TP-Link gigabit managed swtich ,because Syrotech has only 1 gigabit lan ,and i need 4 lan

and im thinking to buy mini pc when ram and ssd price will go down ,so i will use my pi 5 for this ,and use Asus router for just wifi

however i also need a router which is strong enough to give wifi performance

but since openwrt is complicated ,so i tested it on pi 5 ,but i got more confused ,as the mac address i entered in device doest reflect into wan interface

however ,now i will try directly on asus ax53u

i will show you everything ,before connecting to main ont
