No Anant. Read my post above....the SDO told me that they are out of wifi modems, and recently having quit a job, I'm not willing to spend Rs1.5k-2k for a decent router. Just hoping that they get those soon.....he told me that if they don't get any by friday then I would be given a normal modem and I will have to do with it until they get the proper ones.

ya thats been a issue with MTNL with WIFI.......btw MTNL were giving WIFI modems free without any rental about 7 months back provided u stay with them for 6months on some untd plans and offc. modem would have to be returned once connection is disconnected......manny ppl booked during this time.....and hence they put in the rent....and all that......now.....nor do they have much wifi modems with them always scarce as they are chinese made nt like airtel who give beetel wifi modems which could also be made in China..... :D

6 months back?!! that scheme was launched (again) just last month.. i.e for march.and earlier it was in diwali 2009..(when they offered free installation + free wi-fi modem)

I also received a call from airtel for the first time since their internet stopped working and they asked me to have patience as their problem will be fixed very soon, so now it's just a race between the two to get their act together. Whoever gets to my home first will get my business. :)

I had a normal MTNL modem till a few days back. I called 1500 and asked them to change to wifi and they did it almost immediately.

Okay. Here is an update! After 16 days, numerous calls to the SDO, Area manager and several calls to the CMD office, I finally got my mtnl broadband installed today! I was really stoked when it was getting installed, as I was missing watching youtube vids to my heart's content and downloading movies and doing my work at the same time!

I was really really disappointed after it got installed and I checked the speed. Here's the screenshot.

I called the customer care, and they blatantly and shamelessly told me that mtnl only says that it's a 512kbps plan but the speed NEVER reaches that point. He told me that I am not getting anything less than what other users get on this plan usually and that I should dump all hopes of ever getting 512 kbps (or even close) on this plan and be content with what I am getting.

So I'd suggest to not go for mtnl unless you don't have any other choice. They are incompetent, inefficient and basically an openly fraud company.

PS : Mtnl is only staying in my home as a temporary solution till airtel gets it's act back together, because before this major f**k up, I never had any problems with airtel, and I was more than happy with the speed they were providing (I had the 649 plan and speed was always very close to 512kbps if not equal).
