This could very well be the beginning of the demise of Indian test cricket. If the team doesn't win even at home, people are going to lose interest and BCCI will switch to more and more ODIs and T20s. When India was the #1 test team for 2 years between 2009-11, BCCI cancelled ODIs for tests. The reverse will happen now.Last season, it was proven that Indian batsmen can't bat in swinging conditions on green tops in England and Australia. This Mumbai test seems to prove that the current set of Indian batsmen can't bat on made-to-order spinning wickets either. The result of this match could very well be attributed to the fact KP decided to play a great innings that transcended the conditions. But questions must be asked about 1. how English spinners managed to out-bowl Indian spinners, especially the 2 off-spinners Ashwin and Harbhajan, 2. why the current set of Indian batsmen have trouble playing spin in conditions on which they grew up.Gambhir cannot be reprieved just because of the innings he's playing now. One swallow does not make a summer. He's a very good player of spin in any case.Pujara has been outstanding. The value of playing tremendous amount of domestic cricket is evident. Kohli has been disappointing. Based on how he batted in Australia and how he's batted in ODIs in the recent years, one thought he would be climbing up to the next level of greatness by now.The less said about Yuvraj, the better. He's a great talent but has disappointed like Rohit Sharma. Yuvraj is a proven failure in test cricket. He cannot play swing bowling and he cannot play spin to save his life. We have to be content that Yuvraj is good only for ODI and T20s. Raina has issues with the bouncing ball and swing bowling like any one else but he's a good player of spin. He's a better candidate for home tests than Yuvraj will ever be.We now understand the value of Dravid and Laxman and the importance of a big score/start by Sehwag. Forcing Laxman to retire before the end of the 2012-13 season is a mistake. Finally, it's sad but we might be seeing the end of Tendulkar sooner than we expected. He was outstanding till the 2011 world cup. He played well in England and in the first 2 tests in Australia without getting a century. But, in the last 6 tests this year, he's scored 153 runs in 10 innings with an highest score of 27. This kind of slump might be acceptable for an young player but not for a 40 year old legend.
