THE INTERNET Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) claims that telephone bills can be trimmed drastically - all because of the ubiquitous internet. It said that local calls can be made free, whereas STD calls can be offered at 15 paise per minute on the same network. This is possible if the government allows unrestricted domestic internet telephony.
The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) said that free local calls can be made in case of the same network ie within the network of a particular ISP. For calls on other Internet Protocol (IP) network, 10 paise per minute would be charged The ISPAI also revealed that if one makes a call on a mobile or a fixed land line from an IP phone, the STD call rates can be offered at a mere 50 paise per minute. Through the IP telephony, a call to America or Britain costs much cheaper at 95 paise per minute.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has announced that it will come up with the final verdict on allowing domestic net telephony within a couple of months.
