The router can carry 8 Mbps easily. Actual speed will depend on how good your line is.

I suggest take the 4 mbps plan and see the line stats. If the stats are good, you can upgrade to 8 mbps anytime.

Thanks for replying.
I guess i'll choose 4 mbps plan and check the performance.
But please make this clear, i wont have to pay Rs.4000 as CPE charges for taking 8 Mbps plan later?

hey I switched to 8 mbps plan, but I'm only getting 3.5mbps..
these are the stats, please help

SNR margin: 20.5db (d/s) 7.1db (u/s)
Attenuation: 34db (d/s) 22.9db (u/s)
data rate: 3459kbps (d/s) 659kbps (u/s)
max rate: 11232kbps (d/s) 659kbps (u/s)
CRC: 852 (d/s) 611(u/s)

from what I have read and understood on this forum is that, (please correct me if I am wrong) the CRC is way too high, probably need to contact MTNL guys.
anything else which can help.. thanks..

hi I stay in Vile parle west, n I want to switch to 8mbps plan from my current 2mbps plan, these are my router stats, please suggest.

SNR margin: 31.6db downstream and 17.6db upstream
attenuation: 32.9db downstream and 22.1db upstream
data rate: 2047kbps downstream and 509kbps upstream
max rate: 19424kbps downstream and 1347kbps upstream

Your stats are pretty good, can easily achieve 6-8 Mbps downstream.

It looks like your profile isn't set at their end. Call up their helpline and tell them you are on an 8 Mbps plan but getting a sync at 3.5 Mbps. If they change it and still doesn't work, then you can look at CRC.

Hello. I'm struggling with my 8Mbps connection and could use some help. For the last three or four days it has worked for not more than 3-4 minutes at a time, before going down (ADSL and internet lights on modem-router do not glow) for maybe 20 minutes or so. Comes back for 3-4 minutes, then goes off again, and so on and so forth. Over the last two days the downtimes have progressively increased. Often stays down for over 40 minutes or more.

When I spoke to a (horrible) MTNL employee at the exchange (Powai) yesterday, he basically attacked me and said it was my fault for having an 8Mbps line since those are not supported more than 1km from the exchange. This does not make sense to me because I've had the 8Mbps plan for over a year and it has worked more or less okay. My house is about 1.4km from the exchange (road distance).

My router is an Asus N55U. Here are my stats (have only put down the common ones), which I grabbed when the connection last worked, about an hour ago:

Modulation: ADSL2+ (set to automatic)
Annex Mode: Annex M
CRC down: 0
CRC up: 1867
SNR down: 9.3
SNR up: 5.8
Line attenuation down: 35.6
Line attenuation up: 22.5
Date rate up: 2045
Data rate down: 8192

The telephone line works as is it should. Given that the internet connection was more or less fine five days ago, I'm not sure what the problem is. Could it be the router? I don't have a spare one at the moment to check. Also, considering the connection was fine all these months, is there any truth in what the fellow at MTNL said - that switching to 4Mbps will fix it? I mean, if the connection is completely dead for 20-40 minutes at a stretch, will downgrading to 4Mbps change anything?

I've emailed the helpdesk and the selfcare IDs but have – not surprisingly – not heard anything. Before taking this up further with MTNL, I wanted to make sure it's not a router problem. I've tried connecting it to the phone line at the point where it enters the house, and it's the same result.

What is line bonding and is that worth exploring, if distance from the exchange is a factor?

All assistance gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I would trust an Asus to work well, so you could rule out the router. Internal wiring also seems fine. Stats aren't good.

Monitor stats at regular intervals for a day.
