Called up customer care (Bombay) and they say it is a problem from their side, which will be resolved by 6 PM today (Aug 18).

Meanwhile, their DNS servers seem to be having problems so I suggest switching over to OpenDNS.

Lets hope they get back soon.

Congestion is the cause, 210.18.6.89 is in Sify network. cause can be either Airtel or sify networks. run the tracert command during the day and night and see at which hop the congestion is starting

you are running out of bandwidth. when the connection gets choked, it will push up the ping times. get yourself moved to a higher bandwidth plan
