I did something like that with my SMPS (used the blower attachment of vacuum cleaner) and the problem depicted in this thread started only then ..

Strange but system turns on.. power light and HD light also turn on. SMPS fan also blows the air.
I guess the motherboard is extremely sensitive to voltage fluctuations. At least that was the explanation which I had resorted to, because the problem disappeared only after changing the SMPS (which was about 11 years old).
My SMPS is just 1 and half year old...but will try...will have to find SMPS to test the system. In case, voltage fluctuation is reason...is there chance of motherboard blowing out? I have a stabilizer though.
Naah. The SMPS itself has adequate in-built protection. It kinda self destructs without harming the motherboard (that is, if something should go awry).
Checkout http://bit.ly/9N5wXf It mentions the presence of a OVP (over voltage protection) on a SMPS.
hey, i m also facing this problem for 2 weeks. previously my computer starts normally, but for sometime monitor starts very late like about 10 mins, but cpu is working fine, windows starts in background, also i m using a graphic casd(ati radeon 5550)
