Amissh, it will show LTE in top status bar if you are latched to LTE network. You also need a 4g SIM card. They started issuing 4g sim from Jan 2016, so most likely, you are still not on LTE.
New 4g sim are backwards compatible....so they will work with 2g and 3g too. If you are using 2g / 3g network, it will consume the same amount of battery as it did on an older sim.
As per the press release today, LTE is only available in South Mumbai and key business and residential areas in Western Suburbs. Central Mumbai and Navi Mumbai will get LTE coverage by end of March 2016.
Did you also get a warning that "This cellular network has not been certified by the carrier for LTE" ? I get this warning when I turn on LTE on my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.4. Wanted to know if it is okay to ignore and proceed ? Discussion boards at Apple say that LTE will not work if you see this warning....
