Yes, the rights are with Star. Star has a partnership with ESPN currently, hence it will share the feed with ESPN. So, three channels can together broadcast. Plus, ESPNSTAR.com and ESPNcricinfo.com will have the internet/media rights.

In case of a split of the JV between Star and ESPN, Star still has Star Cricket and Star Sports to broadcast the channels on. As as mentioned by the CEO, they can launch another channel if need be to telecast domestic cricket.

Also, I'm not sure if ESPN would want to leave the JV with Star, as that has given them a great foothold in the South & South East Asia market. And since the JV pertains only to sports channels, it would not encroach on any of UTV's existing footprint. On the contrary, a UTV-ESPNSTAR bouquet will have a bigger market value.
They may or may not split. But that was the news some days ago.
It would be good if its ESS :)

I dont think that they will split rather this would generate more revenue for Star India business...Star India pays rs. 40 Cr to BCCI and probably ESS might pay Rs. 50 Cr to Star India per match...so 10 Cr revenue for STar India per match...

i still wonder how can they generate 50cr in revenue per match. i mean seriously... that is too much money being paid per match!

I guess each commercial break is worth 20-30 lakhs. So for an ODI there are 100 overs with max 100 breaks, plus wickets or any interruptions. Pre match and post match discussions and highlights packages. Not to forget the 'L' shaped ads, I guess it is recoverable :)

Funds are generated in more ways than adverts between overs:1. Title Main Sponsor (Ind Vs Aus brought to you by AAA...)2. Sub sponsor Level 1 (... and BBB, CCC)3. Sub sponsor Level 2 (... in association with DDD, EEE, FFF, GGG)4. Title Show 1 sponsor ( Start of play show)5. Title Show 1 sub sponsor ( Start of play show)6. Title Show 2 sponsor ( Between innings show)7. Title Show 2 sub sponsor8. Title Show 2 sponsor ( End of play show)9. Title Show 2 sub sponsor ( End of play show)10. Ads between overs11. During play ad banners12. Sponsored Replays13. Wicket/Four/Six/Drinks break/Timeout ads.

Be ready to experience more of an IPL style coverage of cricket with this kind of fees per match!! Even when India was losing so badly, they were bombarding us with ads even in T20s. Just imagine the plight of the viewer when they start performing well again! I am pretty sure, i will end up watching matches on DD, despite of having the dedicated HD channel subscribed!

BCCI probably handed them out in a file labeled top secret. :D

ooh the statement mentions ESS so i guess star sports and espn are going to broadcast the matches!

Ok it is still mentioned as a possibility. If you see, Star India is totally separate with the JV in terms of intellectual rights.ESS JV did not buy the rights - so essentially it will have to be a separate channel which would be part of Star India bouquet or an agreement has to be reached between ESS JV and Star India which needs to be explored more on the lines of Neo getting the rights from Sony Max to show Nz and Safrica matches recently.

Here is a scary thought - Star India launches a channel, and we see soap artists promoting their Star Plus stuff during matches
