Happy about this news that ESS bagging rights...first thing the rights has gone to the best of the worst...]Better coverage and commentators will be present...good coverage of domestic cricket...viewers can view HD matches for sure...I am happy with this...thank god now Sony will thing twice in coming up exclusive sports channel...

Need to check if its ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS) or only Star. Many news sites are mentioning just Star TV and not ESS.
Because - Star Sports, ESPN may go separate ways in India after 18 years together

Just a doubt :D

STAR wins BCCI Media rights for Rs 3851 crore | Firstpost
The Rupert Murdoch-owned STAR India has won the BCCI’s Media Rights (covering Television, Internet and Mobile) for global territories, for the period July 2012 – March 2018.
STAR India bid Rs 3851 crore for the six-year period for 96 matches. It comes down to an average of around 40 crore per match. Multi Screen Media (Sony) were a close second with a bid of Rs 3700 crore.

“STAR India would work collabaratively with ESPN-STARSports to exploit the rights”, said Uday Shankar, CEO, STAR India. “Right now, we have three sports channels — Star Sports, ESPN and Star Cricket to broadcast the cricket on. However, if required, we could explore the launch of new channels.”

In the recent times, Star coverage has become pathetic. I have stopped watching cricket because of the shit coverage.

It seems the rights were bagged by Star TV India and not ESS....Star India might collaborate with ESS to telecast the matches or else they might start their own channels...

When you compare it with Neo and Tensports its better to watch in ESS...

Yes. STAR got rights, not ESS. We cannot be sure how STAR would cover the broadcast. STAR is different company than ESS (ESPN STAR SPORTS is JV between Disney owned ESPN and News Corp STAR).Disney recently bought UTV, and now they are looking to start whole new channels by rebranding current UTV channels. So they are thinking to leave JV with STAR, and start ESPN "only" channels to covers Sports channels.

There are a lot of things to be decided before a split is agreed upon, I would say lot of rights are held together jointly. So some sort of settlement may be needed before a split

Whoppie i'l be watching Indian Cricket in HD for the next 6 years atleast! :D

dont you know that bcci can cancel the contract .......anytime????

Yes, the rights are with Star. Star has a partnership with ESPN currently, hence it will share the feed with ESPN. So, three channels can together broadcast. Plus, ESPNSTAR.com and ESPNcricinfo.com will have the internet/media rights.

In case of a split of the JV between Star and ESPN, Star still has Star Cricket and Star Sports to broadcast the channels on. As as mentioned by the CEO, they can launch another channel if need be to telecast domestic cricket.

Also, I'm not sure if ESPN would want to leave the JV with Star, as that has given them a great foothold in the South & South East Asia market. And since the JV pertains only to sports channels, it would not encroach on any of UTV's existing footprint. On the contrary, a UTV-ESPNSTAR bouquet will have a bigger market value.
