thank god i read this am so fed up with this internet speed when i travel to the us i use a 100mbs connection but when here its a joke thanks for the update :S

Most prob using ADSL2+ which limits the upload speed to 1.4mbps...you are going to have to live right next to the exchange to achieve the upload speed otherwise if you are within a km from the cabinet/DSLAM then you will prob only pull about 800kbps....

Does Airtel specify anywhere that whether you get 16Mbps (or lower) depends on the distance (among other things) of the copper line from the customer's premise to the Airtel exchange?

I think so their is a way to determine yourself if you will get an 16 Mbps connetion.Logon to your DSL modem via going to 192.168.1.1Go to Device Info --> Statistics --> ADSLYou will get a bunch of values at the right look for Attainable Rate (Kbps) if its above 16500 downstream your line is capable of 16 Mbps download speed, so note that the upload would be low around 1.5 - 2 Mbps only.

But is'nt that attainable rate dependent on the distance from the exchange/DSLAM cabinet?

How does Airtel guarantee that a customer will get 16Mbps regardless of the distance from the exchange?

Airtel cannot or for that matter any ISP cannot guarantee that you will get 16 Mbps for every site or download that you do, coz many sites cap their connection limit. I being a webmaster know this coz I have a dedicated server and we cap the connections at 3 Mbps so that just a few users would not choke the connection.BTW if your attainable rate is lower than 16500 you will not get 16 Mbps coz that is the limitation of your line as you are further away from the exchange.

I agree. But will Airtel tell a prospsective customer that he or she will only get so much Mbps speed BEFORE signing up for this plan? My point here is that Airtel (or any other ISP) should make it clear on their website/media that the plan speed depends on a number of factors (distance, line condition etc) so that prospective customers have a realistic expectation of what they are likely to get.

Secondly, I wonder how Airtel claims (please see Airtel 16 Mbps Broadband in India - India BroadBand) that 70% of households in Chennai, Delhi NCR and Bangalore can get 16Mbps? Is it because their DSLAMs are located close enough to 70% of these households so as to guarantee 16Mbps speed?

It would be nice if at least one representative from every ISP participate (at least read) in this discussion forum and take back some inputs and see how service can be improved. At the least, it will be 'food for thought' for the ISPs.

Anyone agree with me on this? :-)

Since someone mentioned, I just checked my stats. I was impressed by the number I saw there. Can someone please confirm that I am not mistaken :DAttainable Rate (Kbps): 27368 Downstream, 1329 Upstream
