Broadband Speed Test

the world is starting to reach speeds in Gbps and we are still @ 64Kbps. BAH!!!

Hi,

Till day before yesterday bsnl.co.in was listed at 160 position at

https://www.dslreports.com/archive

But within two days it has gone up to 148th position

Okay when I do a speed test on dslreports.com from Win2003 from laptop, i used to get a max of 330/197 (consistent). When doing it from Ubuntu from same laptop consistently i get a min of 1330/197.

After the tweak recommendations from site on Windows now i get 475/197 (consistent).

So the results might be skewed if done from Win systems.

Is there something else, I mean tweaking to be done, to get better speeds with Win 2003?

I have been reading many posts and seeing people talking about their Speed. Especially, these are shared many times repeatedly in different threads. This is becoming a importance now after the introduction of 2mbps.

Everyone wants to know their correct speed. So far, I am known about following methods of identifying the speed.

1) BSNL DataONE Account Admin Page - You will get your speed details.

2) BSNL DataONE Account Admin Page - There is a Service page where you can perform Tests for various Speeds like 256kbps, 512kbps, 1mbps etc. This page shows the image loading. I am not sure how does this help in calculating the actual speed.

3) By logging on to your Modem Config page (http://192.168.1.1/), you can check the Downstream and Upstream speed.

4) Using other websites like www.dslreports.com. (Pls share some good authentic websites which we can trust)

The Speed differs based on various conditions like:
1) Current Network Traffic on the Server you are accessing
2) Your Connection Speed
3) Bad design of the Application (LOL)
4) I noticed someone saying that it depends on how far you stay away from your BSNL Exchange Office. Not sure if this is a real factor?

I personally have seen the speed varying up and down. And I am not able to understand how do I get to know that if my connection is really 256kbps for 24 hours a day.

Please share any more such links and information which will help others to discover the actual speed one should get by performing some simple tests.
Along with the information, kindly share your Speed Test Results with your City/Area.

Finally, one common question "256kbps / upto 2mbps". What is the catch in "UPTO 2mbps"? For Home-3300 plan, they have explictly specified 2mbps.

PS: Ignore this thread if this is a duplicate information and provide the link to existing thread(if any) which discusses this topic.

Thanks in advance.

.....I called up the BSNL DSLAM which supplies the internet to my area and asked the technician whats up with the "upto 2mbps" thing.........and this is what he said(in kannada), "Sir, its all a business tactic to get new customers. Your speed will never actually reach 2mbps and will vary between 384kbps and 1.5-1.6mbps depending on the network traffic".Oh well, atleast we non-unlimited customers come out better........increased speed, increased traffic limit. Anyway I dont mind scheduling my dloads for 2-8 as i have been doing all these years.Peace.....

hey when i log on to my Modem Config page (http://192.168.1.1/) page i get 5664 kbps downstream and 640 kbps upstream LOL ;). I know that's no true....obviously. and i have logged onto that site dslreports and i got the following results for my Home 500 plan

BUT THE PROBLEM :( :( :( is that i don't actually get to experience such speeds. stuck at 6-8 KBPS when downloading any file through any of the above 3 browsers but amazingly the browsing is a lot faster. I have tried to optimize my connection to 256 kbps, 384 kbps, 512 kbps and 1 mbps with TCP optimiser and TuneUp Utilities 2007 but to no effect. :( waaaahh.......... I feel cheated. LOL
Please I am open to suggestions. Thnx

The best way to test the speed is using 'full speed internet broadband' software...its just gives you the correct and accurate speed of your connection..not only that it also makes speed faster.. before i tweaked speed settings...it had 29 kb/sec average.speed and 30kb/sec after the tweak. in my 256k ul900 ;)
