Yep it was working fine on this same modem and then just like that the data light blinked off. Now it has been 3 days. I used another modem just to make sure and i get same result showing PPP down.

It turned out that problem was from BSNL side, i went to the exchange the moment it opened and sat there till someone agreed to talk to me and explain what is going on in detail. Sad thing is the staff themselves didn't know the problem. I was getting various versions of what happened. Someone said its local exchange, some other guy told me that Punjab"s link to Bangalore is severed etc etc.
Finally i met en engineer who seemed knowledgeable and told me that the problem was with the local wiring. And everything else i was told is just plain bullshit. He assured me that net will be up and running by afternoon. I came home and in an hour or so net was up. I had to reset the modem and run the set up wizard. Pheww... seriously guys..BSNL is bhagwan bhrose!!
I don't know how these people run BSNL, it has to be sheer luck that this company is still up and running. But it was an interesting visit to exchange. All uncles were busy playing cards and drinking tea while aunties were busy knitting sweaters.
