Check Split AC Deals on: Flipkart | Amazon | Snapdeal | Infibeam

Hi, I want to buy a split Ac for my living room, which is 25 by 12 feet, or 300 square feet. One dealer told me I should buy the Sharp Inverter 2 ton AC since it would cut electricity costs. The Sharp Ac costs Rs 56,000. Another dealer told me that theres a significant savings in electricity only if you use the Inverter Ac for over 8 hours a day. I use it for about 6 hours a day for 4 months in a year. my living room opens up to a small passageway that leads to the other rooms. We have covered this opening with curtains. He says the curtains are not air-tight enough and thus will make the inverter work much harder and I’ll get much higher bills instead of lower. He suggested I buy the Panasonic 3 star 2 ton Ac which costs Rs 39,000. So, if I buy the inverter Ac, I’ll spend Rs 17,000 more. Will the amount I save on electricity make it worth my paying Rs 17,000 more? or is it, as the second dealer told me, that I will not get significant savings since I use it less than 8 hours a day and since the curtains will make the inverter work so much harder than my electricity costs will anyway increase? I would appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with inverter ACs. Thanks a lot.

You know, you dont really need to freeze. I had a 2 T Samsung in my 700 Sq ft living cum dining room, thinking would install a second 2 Ton at a later point, when needed. There was a stairway to a mezzanine room as well. Under most circumstances this AC was sufficient to make the whole space comfortable at any time of the year (Chennai). You dont need the curtains or air tight room in my opinion. On the inverter vs 3 star, consider the life of the ac as 5-7 years and see if the excess amount is worth spending upfront or on electricity bills, when actually used.

HiThanks for your answer. I’m more worried about the bills than the cooling. According to every dealer I consulted, if the Ac has to cool an area bigger than it is meant for, it will take more energy. What electricity bills were you getting when your Ac was cooling 700 Sq ft living cum dining room?was yours inverter AC?

One thing ive learnt in life is never go by dealer advice. They are mostly 90% to suit them. Very rarely you find a genuine opinion. My bills were normal when using this ac, wouldnt shoot up due to this ones usage. I dont think you will save 17k over lifetime of ac in terms of power consumption. My Samsung 2T was bought in Jan 2006 and has no star rating, they were introduced soon after... it is still running fine now in a living room of about 350 sq ft with a staircase again leading to a mezzanine room. I dont mean this the wrong way, but if you are power conscious, set the temperature of the ac at a more cooler level, like 25 or so. I wouldnt buy a 50K+ ac only because, the acs in my house do not ever last more than 3-5 years when used continously. OG, Hitachi, LG, Carrier, Samsung... all went bust in 3-4 years for me. Had to spend on compressor repair on all of these. Now I have 2 one year old Daikins split, so far so good. The Samsung 2T split is used when we have guests, so not daily, hence it has lasted now 6 years.

When i checked with AMC service guy for buying a new ac for my home, he suggested to go for non-inverter AC...he even told to go for 3 star energy rating AC... he toldthat inverter AC are good for commercial purposes like small shops and clinics because it is required to run for 15-20 hrs/day. In my home we use AC only for 4-5 hrs /day on weekdays and 10 hrs on weekends.....he advised me not to waste money on inverter AC....

May be its only me being so dumb about "Inverter A.C."
two reasons for confusion
1). we have used inverter for 15 yrs, which works as power backup to household in case of power cuts.
(so word inverter projects big big battery in mind first)
2). Using 3 A.C's out of which 2 Run every summer, which do not have star ratings or inverter feature.

Here Details to remove confusion : Source
What is the difference between inverter and non inverter air conditioning units?

Non inverter or Fixed speed air conditioning deliver a fixed amount of power via a fixed speed. This means the compressor has to stop and start to maintain the desired room temperature.

Inverter air conditioning system, varies the speed of the compressors, delivering precise cooling or heating power as required.

How does Inverter Air Conditioning work?

The amount of cooling or heating required by an air conditioning unit varies depending on the outdoor temperature and the amount of heat in the room.

When the cooling or heating capacity needs to be increased, the compressor will operate at a high speed and will increase the amount of refrigerant flow.

Conversely, during moderate outside temperatures for example, when the cooling and heating capacity needs to be decreased, the compressor will operate at a low speed and will decrease the amount of refrigerant flow.

When the inverter air conditioning is switched on, the compressor operates at a high speed in order to cool or heat the room quickly. As the room temperature approaches the set temperature, the compressor slows down, maintaining a constant temperature and saving energy. Any sudden fluctuation in the room temperature, will be sensed and instantly adjusted to bring the room temperature back to the set temperature. EcoAir inverter air conditioning use between 30-50% less electricity to operate.

I will best you and say their advice is 100% to suit whats in their stock and which company provides them the best incentive.
