Just hear this on the news:DD to telecast cricket with 7-minute time lag Indiantelevision.com Team (Updated 23 January 2007 4:10 pm) (23 January 2007 1:30 pm) NEW DELHI: Millions of viewers who don't have access to the Nimbus owned Neo Sports can finally heave a sigh of relief. The Delhi High Court has ruled that terrestrial broadcaster Doordarshan can telecast the ongoing cricket series between India and the West Indies "deferred live" with a seven-minute delay. Seven minutes on an average comprises two overs bowled on the trot. All India Radio will however, be allowed to broadcast its commentary live, with no time lag. The consensus emerged after the High Court, in its order issued today, ruled that 50 million viewers (who don't have cable TV access) cannot be denied the right to watch the game. The timing of the ruling is critical since it comes a day ahead of the second One-Day International to be played in Bubaneshwar, Orissa. It may be recalled that millions of viewers missed out on the action Sunday that saw India defeating the West Indies in the first ODI that was played at Nagpur. While issuing his orders, Justice SK Kaul made it clear that this was an interrim ruling and that the final decision about the Sri Lanka series (that follows immediately after the current four-match Pepsi series gets over) will be taken on 8 February. On the petition filed by Nimbus yesterday, the court asked Prasar Bharati to file its replies by 29 January, to which Nimbus will have to file its rejoinder by 1 February. Nimbus' counsel argued that it would stand to lose cmmercially if Doordarshan were allowed a live feed and said DD was being adamant despite concessions offered by neo Sports. Reacting to the news, information & broadcasting minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi welcomed the decision of the court, stating it (the ruling) was only fair considering DD has "96 per cent reach in the country".Nimbus Sports, the rights holders for the BCCI organized cricket events in India that it had acquired for a whopping $ 612 million, had earlier offered to give the feed to Prasar Bharati, but only under certain specific conditions, and these were not acceptable to the pubcaster.Nimbus had originally suggested a 15 minute deferred telecast on DD referred 'as live'. Nimbus also did not agree to DD showing the matches on its DTH platform DD Direct Plus. Nimbus had said if at all it shares the feed, the signals would have to be encrypted so that it reached houses only on the terrestrial network and not those that get DD signals through cable TV. The talks broke down after Prasar Bharati officials, citing previous government orders and court rulings they claim had gone in their favour, said they should get live feed of the cricket series without any conditions, and that it was also to be shared on DD's DTH platform. Following the breakdown of talks DD officials had gone back to taking the cover of the Uplink-Downlink Guidelines that perforce allow DD to get the telecast feed. FINALLY! But still... when will Neo Sports come on Tata Sky?

Don't be under illusion tht DTH provider r in any negotiations with Neo Sports.... Wht DTH operators r doing is just "wait and watch".... They r hoping DD will get match signals so they don't have to add Neo sports to the DTH platform.... Tht's the main reason Neo sports is asking DD to encrypt the match signals so that DTH operators can't use it... DTH operators r just making a mickey out of customers.... In an interview on Tv some Neo sports offical was saying tht they r hoping to get lucrative deals from DTH operators and if they provide signals to DD they will not have that.... So u can see if Tata Sky want they can have Neo Sports in 5 mins .... but we won't get cos they don't want it....[/b]
That is exactly what is going on. The thing is DTH operators have to pay a lot of money for getting Neo sports on to their platform and Neo are demanding a lot of money. In addition the channel prices are so high that it can't fit in the current package of 300 Rs/- for all channels. If tatasky's rate was increased to Rs 350/- per month for all the channels , they will stand to lose out on a number of new customers who will be scared of the high price. With DD getting the feed from Neo although with a 7 min delay must have pleased the DTH operators no end.

So CAS subscribers are getting Neo Sports for just Rs. 5/= while Neo Sports is suggesting a 10 times higher price to DTH operators? Is this true coz if it is it's really effed up!

funny thing. neo is going to be wetting its pants now. i really don't think 7 minute delayed feed is something that would be suitable for them.so much for paying more than half a billion dollar!

After paying 4k in for STB + installation and Rs. 300 monthly rental I have to see 7 mins delay feed.... Its just not right.... y do I need this DTH if I can see the matches on DD..... I can get DD even without any antenna.... Tata Sky is now just looting customers.... Neo Sports had to be in place well before the first match started... They r just making money and not giving any services...

I was watching the discussion about the telecast row on CNN - IBN where i thought that Dasmunshi was talking out of his arse. But after thinking about it he does have a point when he says Prasar Bharati has the terrestrial rights. The BCCI cannot be given the supreme authority to sell the telecast rights. The entire money is going to BCCI and the government is left with nothing. The government must have a say in this and this can be best achieved by having a model in place where private broadcasters share the feed with prasar bharati with some revenue share ratio ( the suggested 75 : 25 ratio is fair enough i think ). I fail to see how such a mechanism can hurt Nimbus in a big way as i'm sure Nimbus would be giving an inferior feed to prasar bharati. Imo the only problem with Nimbus is that if they were forced to share the feed then they won't be able to charge such high subscription fees for their channels which is ridiculous anyways.Hitman if you think that there is nothing wrong with Neo sports charging 50 Rs/- per month then you need to have a second look. I have already citied the reasons for Tata Sky not getting neo sports in my earlier reply to your post.

how come the government say that their controlled channels has rights to something which have been sold to some other channel?maybe, they would now claim the rights to show the KBC 3 show on the free to air channel because everyone in india has the 'right' to watch the show featuring the 'indian superstar'. the government should get its cut from the money star plus is making.this is all crap. government charges service tax, income tax, entertainment tax and zillions of other taxes. they can straight away charge some kind of a tax on BCCI and shut up. government's ownership in companies competing with private companies harm the competition. we can see this in the fields like:1. petroleum (reliance can't sell petrol/diesel at competitive prices)2. telecom (BSNL won't rent out their network)3. broadband (same as above)4. television (we are discussing this particular issue already)5. power (i had like options in this particular field)6. practically every other field which fits this situation...

Whtever Neo charge must not be a prob for tataksky.... Tata Sky got it all wrong.... They should be having different packages by now.... They r giving all channels in 300rs.... This is just a crap... They r putting burden on themself and also on consumers.... If packages were in place by now than adding Neo Sports could be easier for them... They don't have to pay Rs.50 on behalf of every customer in tht case.... Cos in packages scheme u r charged only for the channels u subscribe for.... So the customer will be directly impacted... and Neo Sports get paid for the subscribers who subscribe to their channel... Whtever happening between Neo Sports and I&B ministry must be of no concern for tatasky.... they r here to provide services which they not providing....

or the government can just fix the price of each channel on the dth platform. and force all broadcasters to provide feed to all the available mediums like the cable guy, dth, cas, iptv.i had like to know one thing. has the government finished up setting up rulings which would allow companies to launch IPTV in india?
