507 upload is too low. It'll give around 0.3-0.4 mbps upload with the current sync rate.

What to do? The more annoying problem is that the connection becomes unusable on even tiny uploads

This is similar to rcom/bsnl promising 4mbps and then setting sync rate at 4096k resulting in lower speeds. You could ask airtel to raise sync to 700k or so, line seems good enough.
