It has been more than a year that I have been waiting for IPB4 to release. The launch is nearby depending upon how long it takes IPS to go from preview demo website to final release. There are a couple of cool features in IPB4 which made me wait for it for so long. But I doubt things with traffic and rankings would get a boost on IPB. I want to give XenForo a try for a couple of months at least. Maybe we can use XenForo for a year. In that time, IPB4 app ecosystem would be sold and the initial bugs would be resolved and blah blah. Switching to vB5 on the day of release was a disaster forcing me to switch to IPB 2 years ago.

The good thing is that the link structure should not break. At least the first page. Your subscriptions would be empty. Tagging support is missing which annoys me because I have spent a lot of time adding tags to threads over the last year and a half. Other than that I have little idea on what would improve and what would suck if I do switch to XenForo. A bunch of you folks probably already visit XenForo powered forums elsewhere on the web so you would already know more than me.

If you want to check out a test migration, you can check it here: XenForo

XenForo certainly has cool nice looks, and my initial impression is, its completing the DB query faster than existing IPB.

you can compare the CPU times, load generated and then decide, but Certainly the beta site is more responsive and instantaneous than the IPB on main.

if I had any forums of my own, I would have switched for the speed I just experienced.

haha. there are a couple of reasons that you feel XF is fast.

it has no ads.
it has no traffic.
it has no js code for affiliate link addition.
logging tables etc are blank because the import is totally fresh.
etc. etc.

but yeah. xenforo is a forum only solution and is pretty new so has been developed from scratch using modern technologies with no legacy code to support. there are benefits wrt to that. plus the development is fast and new versions with new features comes out every six months.

Benefit of running a dead forum... You can do anything with it. There are very few people who are affected :D

If you migrate tonight then make sure all my Wimbledon posts made today are also backed up and restored!! :D

Oh of course. It would be a fresh transfer. I would halt the forum before starting the migration so no data should be lost. Apart from the things that are not supported by XenForo like tags (sob sob). I might need to ignore polls too because the importer was giving errors. I could ask for support from the developers but it's July 4 in America... FREEDOOOOOOOOOOOM Bitches.
