Many have the same doubt. Where are the sources for HD?
Do you think the present transmission source is DVD?
No.
They do not use DVD source for transmission. Only a few
TV channels use DVD as their source that can be seen from the quality (eg win TV, MegaTV ). But not SunNetwork. All their video sources are LD (Laser Disk) with very high quality called as "Transmission quality" which is far more superior to reguar DVDs. The quality of a LD is even better than an BluRay Disk. The only problem with LD is its physical size something like a gramaphone record.
I am surprised to see that LD quality is claimed to be better than Blue ray. LD disk is an outdated format and technology which was introduced in the era of S-VHS Hi-8 days. It has a resolution of 400lines where as DVD is 576P and Blue ray is 1080P (1920 by 1080). I have not said anywhere that for normal TV broadcasting they use DVDs, it was U matic tapes earlier. But for movies I thought they are using DVDs. I have seen enough of Laser Disk and S-VHS in my late 20s and early 30s.
Right now 1080P is the maximum commercially available video quality available for normal use anywhere in the world. I am not talking about the Digital movie cameras where they talk about 5K and more resolutions ex: RED Digital movie camera. Infact a good DVD quality picture itself is very good compared to the DTH transmission SD quality.
Even National Geographic programs are shot using 1920X 1080 (1080P) HD cameras only.
